What contractors found behind the chalkboards was astonishing!
Emerson High School in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, was established in 1895. It has been in service for the past 110 years and was due for some major renovations.
The school hired contractors to replace a few old chalkboards from 1917. What they found behind the chalkboards surprised everyone!
The contractors say they are used to finding old metal pipes and wires, but nothing thus far has been as interesting or historically significant!
The original chalkboards from 1895-1917 were still intact on the walls behind the newer ones! They were loaded with lessons and script from a long time ago!
Principal Sherry Kishore noticed the uniquely circular mathematics table and said that she has never seen this technique before.
"It was so eerie because the colors were so vibrant it looked like it was drawn the same day," English teacher Cinthea Comer said. "To know that it was drawn 100 years ago ... it's like you're going into a looking glass into the past."
The school staff and contractors were blown away by the vibrancy in the historic chalk drawings. The color looks as though it was just drawn yesterday!
Two of the chalkboards had dates on them that showed all of these illustrations and writings could be dated back to November and December of 1917.
No one knows which parts were drawn or written by the teachers verses the students. The handwriting is so clean and perfect that it could have easily been anyone!
Emerson High School is making efforts to preserve this remarkable treasure trove of rich history! And, after all these years, the students of today will finally be getting new smart boards!
