Claudie Dubreuil is a general contractor in Mirabel, Quebec, Canada. She builds nice, normal homes for her customers, so she wanted something more creative when it came to building her own house.
Shipping containersSuburban Men
She settled on creating a home from shipping containers and purchased four from a nearby port for around $12,000 US Dollars. The containers were cut and stacked, creating two stories.
The exterior was covered with unstained hemlock spruce, so it doesn't have to be painted.
The shipping container doors were replaced with huge windows to show off the view.
A gorgeous curved staircase connects the two floors.
The metal floors of the containers are covered with 5 inches of polished concrete and have radiant heating installed.
The home contains an incredible mix of materials, including wood, metal, and concrete. The design feels very modern, yet still cozy and inviting.
Dubreuil wanted an open feel to her bedroom, so she made the bed and bath into one large room, including centering the tub to take advantage of the incredible view.

The house also boasts an exceptional outdoor space with unparalleled views.
Altogether, this amazing project cost somewhere between about U.S.$330,000 to $377,000. It looks like it was worth every penny.
